ABC Kids Graduation 2007 : The Miharu ABC Kids graduation class of 2007 - Momoka, Momoko, Takuma, and Haruto! On March 21st we gathered at the Ogisawa Kominkan (Community Center) for a ceremony to honor our FIRST full class of Preschool graduates. Juntaro graduated last year by himself. These four kids have been with us for THREE and a HALF years. Their English is amazing! They understand everything we say, even at normal American speeds. They are forming complete sentences, and reading/writing at Kindergarten, early First Grade levels. They are SOOO smart and cool! I am very proud of them. I was proud of ALL the kids. They sat and listened thru the WHOLE ceremony! A lot of our kids are leaving us to go into regular Japanese kindergarten or daycare (we can't accept kids without their parents present because we are a "Circle" not a school YET), so we will miss them. A few are moving away - Yui and Hitomi, Haruto and Kou - but most of them will come back for Summer School and Special events and/or attend one of our other classes, if not the daytime Preschool program.

ABC Kids Humble Beginnings : 2003 Miharu ABC Kids started as an occassional class at the Rice Lake House. By Summer of 2003, we had enough students to hire a young teacher from Canada, Jacky Drouin - An angel and a godsend! We rented an old dormitory from the Town of Miharu and started our Mommy-run Pre-school. And history is made.

Goodbye Alaine : In August 2006, ABC Kids bid farewell to Alaine Davis who was our teacher for (almost) two years. The kids and moms (and Alaine) had a tearful time at Koriyama Station as Alaine caught the train to Tokyo. Bye, Alaine! Good luck! Take Care! Be Happy! See you again soon! We love and miss you!

2003 Xmas Cookies and Crafts for TV : Dec of 2003, I was asked to prepare Christmas Cake and turkey for NHK TV in Fukushima. I explained that Americans don't usually do cake - we do cookies and cupcakes and candy. So they asked me to make some to show. The ABC Kids moms came and helped us bake and decorate cookies and cupcakes and make a star tree for the program. Aren't they cute? Kids from Miharu Elementary School also came and made glitter pinecones to decorate our tree.

2006 Halloween : At the last moment, I relented and let ABC Kids contact MIFA to see if we could use the RLH for trick or treating as we had in the past. MIFA should get down and kiss my feet because ABC Kids spent over $600 at the RLH in the course of the two days of events for our students. Of course, I never got so much as a thank you from MIFA for bringing in this kind of business, and then the WITCH put it into the MIFA Board Meeting notes as if the events were MIFA sponsored! Ha, ha, ha!!!

2006 Trick or Treating : Miharu ABC Kids Trick or Treating and Carving Pumpkins in the Fall of 2006. Thank goodness ABC Kids agreed to use the Rice Lake House for Trick or Treat of MIFA wouldn't have been able to pay the staff or the electric bill this month. (But what else is new?) Thank you, ABC Kids, for dropping over $800 worth of business at the Rice Lake House this month. What would/will they do without you? I wonder if MIFA even will notice? Or, gods forbid, say "thank you!"

Running Noodles July 2006 : A summer tradition in Japan is "running noodles". Nagashi Somen. We run cooked white rice noodles down a trough made from a split of bamboo. The trick is to catch the noodles as they pass by. We eat them COLD and dip them into a small dish of "tare" or sauce (made from soy sauce). Yummmy!

2004 Fall BBQ Party : In Japan we have BBQ parties in the FALL called Imonikai. Usually involves cooking meat and veggies on a grill and dipping in a teriyaki-like sauce. Very yummy. Also requires "festival soup" or Tonjiru - a kind of pork and vegetable soup that is often served at festivals (hence my knickname for it).
