Jeana Schieffer (Japan) (gna2000)  > Interesting Japanese Customs > Misc Interesting Customs
Pictures I want to share of interesting Japanese customs that may not be familiar to people from other countries. Well, of course, many of the diretories in this online album are about interesting Japanese customs (like Kevin's School in Japan), but these are things that don't fit in other categories, or that I especially want to highlight.

Jeana Schieffer (Japan) (gna2000) > Close up of Emperor and Empress dolls at Hina Matsuri (hinamatsuri)
Jeana Schieffer (Japan) (gna2000) > Japanese doll festival or Girls' Day (Hina Matsuri) is the first part of March. To mark the occassion, grandparents must buy their newborn granddaughters a set of dolls! See pictures of traditional dolls here. But the interesting thing is all the OTHER hina matsuri dolls like the Mickey and Minnie dolls and Hello Kitty and AnPanMan doll sets. Aren't they cute?

Jeana Schieffer (Japan) (gna2000) > When school starts in April (Japanese school year is April to March!) the first graders will be sporting brand new leather backpacks. Boys will wear black and girls will wear red ones usually, but recently newer colors are also offered. In any case, the grandparents are expected to buy a $100 to $300 backpack for the kids. Sounds expensive, but they last the complete 6 years - are virtually indestructible, and weather proof! So it's really a good deal.

Jeana Schieffer (Japan) (gna2000) > Red Bean flabored KitKat bars. Japanese have LOTS Of different flavors of kitkat bars, because "kitkat" sounds like "you will surely WIN" in Japanese, so friends give them to other friends as encouragement before big tests or games or interviews.....
Jeana Schieffer (Japan) (gna2000) > aren't these little capes for your dog cute? Yes, this is a little doggie coat! Or maybe not? maybe it was for little girls, based on the purses hanging below. But there were pictures of doggies wearing these capes and carrying purses! Hmmmm!
